Braiding for Black Hair

Black hair braiding extends back to ancient Africa from the clearly visible hair braids in photographs of the mummy Queen Nedjmet (1070-946 B.C.) who lived and ruled in the ancient African civilization of Kush, now known as the Sudan. Today many blacks adorn braids as an expression of their African history, culture and beauty. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Texture

    • Black hair tends to have a tight coil structure, which helps braids stay in place. Very tightly coiled hair is due to the nearly flat, ribbon-like structure of the follicles.

    Styles

    • Black hair braids have many styles including cornrows, which are flat braids extending from the front to the back of the head; box braids, which are individual braids throughout the head; and the French braid, which is one large braid extending from the front to the back of the head.

    Technique

    • Braiding consists of taking three separate, adjacent masses of hair with both hands and continuously weaving each successive hair mass above the other until you form a complete braid.

    Considerations

    • Women with thin hair may add synthetic or human hair to the braid to increase braid volume. If braids are too tight, hair loss may occur.
