When it comes to airline travel, delays and cancellations are inevitable because of weather, mechanical issues and other unforeseen problems. As a result, sometimes passengers cancel flights. In such instances, Southwest Airlines follows a specific cancellation policy.

Types

Passengers who purchase Southwest Airlines “Business Select” or “Anytime” tickets have the right to a full refund should they cancel flights. According to the airline, Southwest’s non-refundable “Wanna Get Away” airline tickets may still be canceled, however, the airline offers no cash refunds.

Features

All canceled tickets, whether refundable or non-refundable, qualify for Southwest’s “Reusable Funds” program, where 100 percent of the ticket price can be applied to future travel. The funds must be used within the 12 months following the cancellation. For passengers who purchase non-refundable tickets or want additional protection, Southwest partners with Access America to offer travel protection insurance. The cost of the insurance depends on the airline ticket amount and provides reimbursement in case of cancellation.

Procedures

Passengers wishing to cancel flights before the departure date and time can do so online on Southwest's website or by calling reservations at 1-800-435-9792. If the flight has already departed, passengers can still cancel by calling the reservation department's 800 number.
