Glossy Screen Monitor Vs. Flat Screen Monitor

Glossy Screen Monitor Vs. Flat Screen Monitor thumbnail
Glossy and matte LCD screens function the same way; only the coating is different.

When it comes to choosing a glossy or matte LCD monitor, the only real issue is preference. Choosing a finish for your monitor should depend on how you use your computer and the lighting in your computer room.

  1. Glossy

    • Glossy LCD screens offer the highest range of brightness and contrast, often featuring more vibrant colors and crisper displays than their matte counterparts. Two potential downsides to glossy screens: they may tire your eyes more quickly than matte screens and they smudge more easily.

    Matte

    • Matte LCD screens use a polarized coating to cut down on glare; they are sometimes called "anti-glare" screens. Some downsides to this coating: colors can appear duller than on a glossy screen and the display may sometimes seem a bit fuzzy.

    Glare

    • The biggest difference between glossy and matte LCD screens is glare. Glossy screens are more prone to reflect light; when the screen is dark, you're more likely to see your surroundings reflected. Some users also note that colors on glossy screens may appear less true than those on matte screens.
