Information on the Hyundai Elantra

The Elantra is an economy sedan manufactured by Korean carmaker Hyundai. Since its creation, the Elantra has undergone many overhauls, turning the once notoriously unreliable Elantra into a reputable, safe and reliable vehicle, according to Edmunds.com.

  1. History

    • First released in the U.S. 1992, early Elantra models had a bad reputation for being undependable, according to Edmunds. As of late 2010, there have been four generations of Elantras: 1991 through 1995, 1996 through 2000, 2001 through 2006 and 2007 and later.

    Other Names

    • In other countries, the Elantra had gone by a couple different names. In South Korea, the car was sold as the Hyundai Avante. In parts of Australia and Europe, it was known as the Avante or the Lantra. In Indonesia, the car has also gone by "Bimantara Cakra" and "Bimantara Nenggala." In 2001, Hyundai standardized the name, making "Elantra" the worldwide moniker.

    Features

    • A small sedan -- a related hatchback is known as the Elantra Touring -- the vehicle was available in 2010 in three trim levels. A 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine powered the car, producing 138 horsepower and 136 foot-pounds of torque. Horsepower is slightly reduced in California models. Buyers could choose from four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmissions.
