Domestic Airline Regulations

Make your journey through the airport speedier by following airline regulations.

Business travelers who fly weekly know their way through airports and airline restrictions with true dexterity. For the rest of us, learning the ways of the sky across the U.S. requires a more conscious engagement.

  1. Airport Timeliness

    • Arrive at the airport with plenty of time for check-in and security clearance. Domestic carriers recommend arriving at the airport at least 60 minutes before your flight's departure. Check-in closes 30 minutes before a flight's scheduled departure and passengers are required to be on board the aircraft at least 15 minutes prior to departure.

    Luggage

    • Pack light if you plan to carry your luggage on board. Restrictions for carry-on luggage vary by airline, but the general rule is one carry-on suitcase and one personal item for each traveler. Overhead bins are generally sized so that suitcases with a total of 45 inches or less should fit securely on board. Again, check with your airline for specific rules. Domestically, many airlines charge a fee for checked baggage.

    Exit Rows

    • Pass up that exit row if you are traveling with children. Federal rules stipulate that someone seated in an exit row must be at least 15-years-old and able to follow the instructions of crew members in case of an emergency.

    Identification

    • Present a photo ID issued by the government at check-in for domestic flights. This can be a state or city ID, military ID, passport or naturalization card, among other government-issued IDs. Foreign travelers registering for domestic flights within the U.S. must present their passport.
