What Is a DTS WAV File?

A DTS WAV file is a type of audio file that supports high-end surround sound playback. This type of file may require special software or speaker setups to obtain the intended quality of the audio.

Background

Digital Theater Systems created DTS Digital Sound for use in mainstream film releases. DTS audio is primarily based on 5.1- or 7.1 -channel surround sound audio. This format is commonly available on DVD film releases but requires either five or seven full-range discrete speakers and a sub-woofer to take full advantage of the quality.

File

DTS WAV files are files that originally possessed a .dts file extension but have since been converted to .wav. Audio conversion software, such as WAV MP3 Converter and River Past Audio Converter, allows you to perform this conversion.

Considerations

For normal playback of DTS WAV files, computers require compatible software. Most popular audio playback software is capable of DTS WAV file playback with the right decoder or codec installed (many are software specific). AC3Filter (a surround sound decoder), in conjunction with VLC Media Player, is another option. Without the right equipment or software, you will experience less than intended quality or errant speed upon playback.
