What Is the pH Balance of Shampoo? thumbnail
When it comes to hair, pH matters.

The term pH is often associated with shampoo. The pH scale measures acidity verses alkaline levels, and pH stands for potential hydrogen. Water is neutral because it is half alkaline and half acidic. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Acidic Shampoo

    • Shampoos that are more acidic will have a pH level of about 0 to 7. According to Sci-toys.com, most shampoos are made to be acidic because that makes the hair smoother. Citric acid is often added to make shampoos more acidic.

    Alkaline Shampoo

    • Shampoos with a higher pH level are more alkaline. These shampoos can leave hair rough and brittle, according to Hair Finder. Alkaline shampoo will have a pH of 7.1 to 14. Baby shampoo has a pH level of about 7.3 so that it will not sting a baby's eyes. This is not enough acidity for adult hair and can damage it.

    Optimal pH

    • Style City recommends using a shampoo that has a pH level of about 5 or 6. Style City reports that hair's natural pH level is 5.
