Playstation 1 is a video game console developed by the company Sony Corp. The Playstation 1 was first released in Japan on December 3, 1994. Since then, Sony has designed and sold the Playstation 2 and 3.

Sony originally was paired to work with Nintendo to develop an SNES-CD console, but tension between the companies grew and they split ways. The Sony Playstation 1 had its official launch in the United States on September 9, 1995 with a starting price of $299. Sony stopped production on the Playstation 1 in 2005.

Some of the top video game series that the Playstation 1 helped to make popular are still around: Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Gran Turisma, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk Pro-skater, Silent Hill, Driver, Grand Theft Auto and Medal of Honor, originally all began on, or had games on, the Playstation 1.
