What Is an Epilog Laser?

An Epilog laser is used for engraving and made by Epilog, a U.S. company in Colorado. Different models of Epilog lasers are used for engraving wood, glass, plastics, metal, electronics and fabric.

Background

Epilog lasers were introduced in 1988. John Doran, a Lockheed Martin rocket scientist, built the first Epilog laser model in his basement. With Steve Garnier, who was working for an embroidery equipment manufacturer, he developed a computer-operated laser system that created graphic images.

The Eclipse

The Epilog laser was much smaller and cheaper than any systems available on the market, according to CLI Houston. A second-generation Epilog laser called the Eclipse was introduced in 1991 as the first laser system that could be operated directly from CorelDRAW. The software could direct the laser to cut designs, just as a printer prints designs.

Uses

Epilog lasers are available worldwide for both commercial and home use. Applications include signage, product and barcode engraving, award engraving, cabinetry and fabric design.
