The median salary range for psychiatrists with less than a year of experience is $68,784 and $148,559 in 2010, according to PayScale. Although a survey by the physician recruiting firm, Locum Tenens, purports that psychiatrists with five years of experience had an average salary of $198,100 in 2010. The average salary overall was $202,973, according to the Locum Tenens' survey. However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that average salaries for psychiatrists was $163,660 in 2009.

According to 2000 and 2001 combined survey data provided by American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the starting income for child and adolescent psychiatrists is higher than for adult psychiatrists. Additionally, insurance companies often reimburse subspecialists at a higher rate.
