The Penny Test for Tires

If you have a penny in your spare change, you don't need to wait until you visit your mechanic to check the depth of your tire tread. The penny test for tires is the easiest way anyone can check tread depth and it only costs one cent.

  1. Importance of Checking Tire Tread Depth

    • Tires that are heavily worn do not grip the road as well as new tires or tires with adequate tread depth. This can make it harder to control your vehicle in inclement weather, such as rain or snow. Also, in many states, it is illegal to drive a vehicle with tires that are significantly worn.

    Performing the Test

    • You can use any standard United States Lincoln penny for this test. Hold the penny between your thumb and forefinger, gripping it on Lincoln's bust so his head is fully visible. Insert the penny upside down into the grooves on your tire.

    What the Results Mean

    • If part of Lincoln's head is obstructed by the tread, then your tires are at a safe tread depth. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, however, your tire tread is less than 1/16 of an inch and you should replace your tires.
