Wireless Networking Devices are used to create a wireless network

Setting up a wireless Internet connection (also known as wireless networking) can be accomplished in various ways. The most typical way is to buy a wireless router and install it to an existing network.

  1. Routers

    • Most of the time, creating a wireless network requires a separate network device called a router. The router takes the network signal from the modem and converts it to a wireless signal, which allows wireless enabled devices to connect to that network. Sometimes, however, you may already have a wireless enabled modem, which is a modem and a router combined into one device.

    Costs

    • As with everything, the costs for wireless networking depend on where you go for the devices and what devices you use. Often, ISPs (Internet Service Providers) sell routers or wireless enabled modems. These are often at a higher cost and, depending on the ISP, may result in an additional monthly charge. A traditional router can cost between $20 and $80, where some routers with additional features may exceed those amounts.

    Cables

    • Another decision is whether to use USB or Cat 5e Ethernet. Ethernet generally allows for faster data transfer, whereas USB can often allow for longer cables, though specially-made Ethernet cables can be ordered at a specified length. Normally, routers come supplied with the cables and software necessary to set up the device.

    Retail Outlets

    • Buying a router directly from a retailer can be cost effective and knowing what to look for will prove beneficial. Certain Cisco routers require set up to be done via CLI (command line interface), while others, targeted to the home user market, utilize software and visual interfaces for set up.
