Cage, Bedding, & Potting Soil for a Rose Haired Tarantula thumbnail
Rose hair tarantulas are adaptable loners that can live for more than 15 years.

The colorful Chilean rose hair tarantula is a fairly inexpensive and easy pet to maintain. The basics required for this adaptable, exotic spider include an appropriate enclosure, soil mixture and dish of water.

  1. Cage

    • The rose-haired tarantula fares best in an appropriately-sized secure glass or plastic enclosure, away from drafts. Tarantulas do not require much room, as it makes them feel exposed; therefore, the cage should be just large enough for them to move around freely. A five- or 10-gallon tank is ideal.

    Bedding

    • Tarantulas enjoy moist bedding at least 3 inches deep. Small half logs or pieces of bark for the tarantula to use for burrowing help to mimic its natural setting.

    Soil

    • Organic soil containing peat moss and sandy soil or bed-a-beast, which is made from coconut fibers, makes a good substrate for rose hair tarantulas. The soil should be free of chemicals and moist but not so moist that it will not support a burrow.
