United Airlines operates out of the United States but has a number of global destinations. Passengers will want to familiarize themselves with the regulations for carry-on luggage so that they know how to prepare for their destinations. They might need more space for a cold climate than a warm one. Furthermore, they will need to know what items they can take aboard United flights, according to both TSA and United policies.

Size Restrictions

United Airlines regulates both the size of some items within carry-on luggage and the size of carry on luggage itself. All toiletries, such as toothpaste, contact lens solution and soap, must be 3.4 ounces or less. No passenger may take more toiletries than will fit in one quart-sized, slide-locking plastic bag. All of these items must be in the bag so that security can examine them separately, if necessary. There are exceptions for some items, like baby formula and medication. These standards are in keeping with regulations set by the TSA. United won't allow an bags bigger than 14 by 9 by 22 inches.

Personal Items Rules

United Airlines permits one carry-on bag and one personal item. The personal item can be a large purse, a backpack, a laptop bag, a messenger bag or anything similar. The same content restrictions apply to the personal item as the carry-on luggage item. Certain items do not count as personal items and include umbrellas, diaper bags and child seats.

Content Restrictions

United Airlines lists several items it does not allow on flights in addition to the Transportation Security Administration restrictions. The only knives that can go in carry-on luggage are butter knives with round blades and plastic knives. United Airlines does not permit scissors that come to a point, either. Because regulations are subject to change and any questionable items make security checks a hassle, it is typically advisable to leave anything remotely sharp out of carry-on luggage.

T.S.A. and Non-U.S. Departure Restrictions

TSA handles domestic travel, and United Airlines requires adherence to TSA policy. Other countries have their own policies, so it is important to check with the guidelines that apply to the departure country. As for TSA, it is against policy to bring most chemicals, all weapons and most tools on a flight. Some of these items, such as secure, legal firearms, can go on board in the cargo hold. There is an extensive list of prohibited items, but the general rules are that if it is sharp, flammable, explosive, caustic or a weapon, it cannot go in the cabin with a passenger.
