What Does Starting & Running a Website Entail? thumbnail
Starting a website requires many choices, including whether to come up with and register a domain name.

People who wish to have a website may consider designing and developing their own website to have direct control of customizing the website and to save money on a developer's fees. However, starting and running a website can be complex.

  1. Considerations

    • The user must decide if she wants to purchase her own domain name or use free hosting. She can then choose form a variety of website editors to create her website--either by using a What You See Is What You Get interface that shows the website much as it will appear to the visitor or by using Web programing and scripting languages. In addition to this, she may design a graphical component of the website in a program such as Photoshop.

    Cost

    • If she purchases a domain for her website, she will pay an annual fee that varies upon the name and extension. She must also purchase website hosting. She may choose to use the same company for both services or use different companies. Typically, users can purchase monthly or yearly hosting plans. Most hosting companies offer plans with staggered pricing, based on how much space and bandwidth the plan includes.

    Misconceptions

    • Some people mistakenly believe that they can easily replicate a professional website with little or no design or development experience. However, professional developers may not only have experience but a relevant degree that qualifies them to do such work. In addition to this, the user may wish to employ scripts, such as a shopping cart or Content Management System, that are beyond her comfort level. Users may also struggle with defining the purpose of their website.
