Pot Belly Pigs Need Same Care as Most Other Pets

The potbelly pig is fast becoming a favorite for many people who want a different experience in owning a pet. They are described as extremely clean, intelligent and making very loving pets. As with any pet in your care, the potbelly pig also has its health issues.

Causes for Vomiting

Vomiting by your pig could be due to a parasitic infestation and hyperthermia. Consuming potentially hazardous materials such as toxic plants, chocolate, anti-freeze or any spoiled or rancid foods can also cause vomiting. Vomiting with a yellow discharge can be a sign of potentially serious illness and you need to contact your veterinarian immediately.

Treatments

If you note that your pig has eaten something toxic, call your veterinarian immediately. You may be able to give your pig some hydrogen peroxide, ipecac or Pepto-Bismol, per the instructions of your veterinarian, in order to get the stomach emptied of the toxic substance. An electrolyte solution and plenty of fluids are necessary to replenish lost fluids.

Prevention/Solution

Monitor your pot belly pig and everything eaten, as pigs do love to eat. Keep a First Aid kit always handy, along with your veterinarians' phone number in case of emergencies.
