How to Compare the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic
Go green by buying a fuel-efficient compact car. Popular choices for economical transportation include the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic. Look at more than mileage estimates when comparing these cars. Consider how and where you drive.
-
Price and Mileage
-
In 2010, the base price of the cheapest Toyota Prius was $22,800---$7,000 more than the lowest-priced Honda Civic. Every Prius uses a hybrid engine with a fuel efficiency rating of 51 miles per gallon (mpg) in city driving and 48 mpg on the highway. Honda offers Civics with gas or hybrid engines. Mileage ranges from 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway for sport models to 40 mpg city/43 mpg highway for the Civic Hybrid sedan.
Styling and Options
-
Prius offers one model with 5 different trim packages. Honda Civics differ in engine type and size and by coupe (2-door) or sedan (4-door) styling. Decide what features matter to you in safety, performance, warranty, comfort and styling and compare each car's standard items, upgrade options and additional costs.

Real-World Comparison
-
Test-drive the Prius and Honda Civic models you are considering. Check out visibility, turning radius, steering and handling, dashboard controls' layout, acceleration, interior space and cargo room. Responses to these elements will be subjective. Reading a list of specifications does not tell you which car feels more comfortable if you are very tall, for example.
