LCD Viewing Angle Explained

Liquid crystal display (LCD) technology has expanded rapidly in recent years and is now an integral part of desktop and laptop computers and televisions, among other devices. This expansion is due in large part to the improvement of the technology, including the viewing angle.

  1. Bias Angle and Viewing Angle

    • The bias angle of an LCD panel is the angle from the perpendicular at which the display is best viewed. The viewing angle is the angle, on either side of the bias angle, through which the contrast level of the display provides acceptable viewing.

    Typical Viewing Angle

    • The so-called twisted nematic (TN) technology typically used in LCD panels limits the viewing angle to around 120 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically. In an effort to improve the viewing angle, some manufactures add wide view film (WMV) to their LCD panels.

    Considerations

    • The size of the viewing angle of an LCD is determined by several factors, including the type of liquid crystals used and the duty cycle. The duty cycle is the percentage of the refresh period for which each unique frame is displayed.
