Breads Baked in Jars

Quick breads and cakes can be baked in jars and given as gifts.

Baking breads in jars adds a twist to traditional quick bread baking methods. Breads such as banana, zucchini and pumpkin can be baked in heat-resistant canning jars and given as gifts. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Features

    • Before baking, canning jars must be sterilized. Upon removing jars from the oven, place lids and let cool. Jarred breads and cakes can keep for up six months provided jars are sealed properly and stored in a cool, dry and dark place.

    Considerations

    • Jars must be greased properly for breads and cakes to slide out easily. According to Mother Earth News, bakers must use wide-mouth jars with no neck; otherwise, the bread can get stuck in the jar. Additionally, using large canning jars could prevent breads and cakes from baking thoroughly.

    Warning

    • Although some bread-in-a-jar recipes call for jars to be vacuum sealed and stored at room temperature, doing so could promote bacteria growth. Sealed jars must be stored in the refrigerator or freezer and checked for mold every month.
