The fetal pig is used in the study of the muscle groups through dissection.

Since pigs are mammals, the muscular system of a fetal pig is similar to humans. The fetal pig is used for educational purposes to dissect and learn all the internal and external structures and functions of the various systems in the body including the muscular system.

  1. Head/Neck/Shoulder

    • There are 17 muscles studied for the head, neck and shoulders of the fetal pig. Some of the muscles of the fetal pig are the facial nerve and parotid duct, thymus gland, external jugular, triceps, biceps, and pectorals.

    Lower Limbs

    • The lower limb includes 13 muscles such as the rectus femoris, gastronemus, tensor fasciae latae and pectineus, among others.

    Benefits

    • The study and dissection of the fetal pig provides information on all muscle groups of the upper and lower body as well as the reproductive systems for male and female, the digestive, heart, urinary, respiratory and nervous systems.
