The Safety of SUVs vs. Pickup Trucks

If you're shopping for a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) or pickup truck, you'll want to examine factors like fuel mileage, warranties and safety ratings. The nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates vehicles on how well they protect drivers and passengers. "Good" is the highest score, followed by "acceptable," "marginal" and "poor."

  1. Top Safety Picks

    • Vehicles that have electronic stability control and receive good ratings in all testing categories are the institute's top safety picks. 2010 SUVs receiving this designation from the IIHS include the Honda Element, Jeep Patriot, Subaru Forester and Volkswagen Tiguan. Other SUVs chosen include the 2011 Ford Flex, Chevrolet Equinox, Volvo XC60 and Kia Sorento. No trucks made the list.

    Pickup Ratings

    • Trucks rated as good for their protection in front, side and rear crashes include the 2011 Toyota Tundra, Toyota Tacoma and Honda Ridgeline, as well as the 2010 Ford F-150. The 2010 Dodge Dakota Crew Cab received a good mark for front-crash safety, but earned marginal marks for side and rollover protection.

    Other SUV Ratings

    • Large SUVs receiving good ratings for safety in front, side and rear crashes include the 2010 Audi Q7, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave. Vehicles receiving a marginal mark include the 2010 Honda CR-V, which got a marginal score for rollover safety, and the 2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara, which got a marginal score for rear crash protection.
