How to Get a Master's Electrical License in West Virginia

A West Viriginia master electrician's license requires an exam and years of experience.

To obtain a master electrician's license in West Virginia, you must apply to the state fire marshal and pass an exam. West Virginia also requires work experience to qualify to take the exam.

Application

To start the process towards your master electrician's license, you must apply to the electrician's license section of the West Virginia State Fire Marshal.

Exam

A passing grade on a four-hour, open book exam on the National Electrical Code is required for licensing. For a master electrician's license, expect 50 multiple choice questions and 10 calculations on your exam. You may use a calculator and "Ugly's Electrical Reference" book.

Prerequisites

To qualify for the master exam, you need five years in industrial, commercial and residential electrical work. If you do not have five years experience, you may qualify for the journeyman exam, which only requires apprenticeship qualifications.

Fees

The exam for a master electrician's license costs $25 (as of 2010). In addition, a license costs $50 and must be renewed every year. West Virginia honors master electrician licenses from select states.
