What Is Silverlight for MSN?

Microsoft Silverlight is a web application that integrates graphics, multimedia and animation. MSN has incorporated Silverlight technology applications into a multi-feature browser graphical interface called the Bing Bar.

  1. Definition

    • The Bing Bar, formerly the MSN toolbar, is a browser extension toolbar powered by Silverlight for Internet Explorer and Firefox web browsers. Toolbars are widgets that typically consist of on-screen buttons, menus, icons or other output or input elements designed to facilicate and enhance how users interface, or interact, with web browsers.

    • Silverlight for MSN enables the Bing Bar to feature visual effects, such as themes, colors and slide, flip and rollover animations. The Bing Bar offers "flyout" content windows, or windows that allow users to display MSN portal content without the need to exit the Internet page they currently have open. The Bing Bar also features sports, weather and news buttons, and offers "Breaking News" notifications that alert the user of severe weather or breaking story alerts. MSN Bing Bar incorporates Windows Live features, including Windows Live CD, Hotmail and Messenger.

    • The Bing Bar is set to replace the Windows Live Toolbar in the upcoming version, titled "Wave 4" of the Windows Live Essentials suite of freeware applications.
