The Safety of Laptops
Laptops can cause health problems. According to "PC World," Dell had to recall 4.1 million laptops in 2006 because of the risk of exploding batteries. Also, your laptop itself is vulnerable to theft, as its portability also means that someone can easily walk off with it.

Misconceptions
-
Laptops do not emit enough radiation to cause any concern. Also, they do not give off enough heat to damage a fetus or baby, according to Baby Zone. The biggest physical problem caused by laptops stems from the potential to cause nerve and back pain from hunching over to see the screen.
Theft
-
About 40 percent of laptop thefts occur in office settings, according to the University of Washington (UW) Police. Over all, 10 to 15 percent of all laptops and other portable electric equipment, such as PDAs, are misplaced or stolen. The majority of laptops come with a port for security cable to reduce theft---this cable costs between $30 and $50, according to the UW Police.

Ergonomics
-
If you use your laptop often, place it on a desk and use an external keyboard, according to the University of Pittsburgh. If you choose to work with the laptop on your lap, keep your wrists in a neutral position and tilt the screen to allow you to keep your neck as straight as possible.
