Peppermint Oil to Repel Fleas

Fleas attack your pets, making them feel uncomfortable and itchy. If the pet continues scratching, it can even lead to an open wound and potential infection. Peppermint oil is an alternative to flea sprays, but it repels the fleas, rather than killing them.

Uses

Add a few drops of peppermint oil to your dog or cat's shampoo. Use pure peppermint oil, such as an essential oil, rather than a peppermint oil for cooking, which is typically diluted with other items. Bathe your pets in this shampoo at least once a week.

Considerations

Soak a cotton ball in peppermint oil and add to the bag or canister of your vacuum cleaner. The heat from the vacuum releases the oil into the carpet and may repel fleas from the house.

Alternatives

Avalon Pomeranians recommends mixing peppermint oil with other oils, including eucalyptus and citronella to make an insect repellent for pets that also moisturizes the skin.
