LCD or plasma?

LCD and plasma television sets may look similar on the outside, but both are created with different technologies. Furthermore, cost, picture quality and availability are important features to compare when deciding whether to purchase an LCD or plasma television.

  1. Technology

    • Plasma TVs are equipped with thousands of pixel cells that generate electric pulses that excite the xenon and neon gases inside the TV to glow with color and light. LCD TVs are a connection of thin-film transistors that give voltage to liquid crystal cells between two pieces of glass.

    Cost

    • In general, plasmas cost less than the same-size LCD TV. However, LCDs have an LED (light-emitting diode) backlight that can save money by using less energy than a plasma TV. Plasma TVs start at 40 inches, while LCDs are available in smaller sizes.

    Picture

    • Because of the individual pixels in a plasma TV, color is more accurate than on an LCD. Moreover, plasma TVs provide better horizontal and vertical viewing angles, whereas the picture on an LCD can appear black when viewed from the side.

    Availability

    • Although plasma TVs generally have superior picture quality and are cheaper, many manufactures offer more brands of LCDs than plasmas. As of 2010, four brands offered plasma TVs: LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Insignia.
