What Is the Meaning of Crystals Silica Carbonate?

Scientists have discovered an artificial process that mimics biomineralization

The correct term is actually crystals silica carbonate and it is a breakthrough in the study of biomineralization. Studies show that metal carbonates can be controlled in such a way as to create complex structures that could previously be made only by living organisms.

Crystals silica carbonate refers to the growth of crystalline shapes from a mixture of barium or strontium carbonate and silica in an alkaline medium.

Discovery

In 2008, Juan Manuel García-Ruiz of the Instituto Andaluz do Ciencas de la Tierrain and his group of scientists in Spain discovered how to grow elaborately curved, crystalline structures, similar to those made by living organisms in the making of shells and bones.

Process

As the carbonate crystal grows, it removes carbonate from the solution around it, causing the pH of the solution to drop around the crystal. This provides a favorable environment for silica, which then forms a sheath around the growing crystal. The silica then raises the pH, which in turn promotes the crystallization of the carbonate. This cycle of oscillating pH during which each nanocrystal of carbonate is encapsulated by silica.

Phases

There are three distinct phases of growth: the initial nanocrystalline composite, followed by the formation of a two-dimensional disc protrusion, then the formation of crystalline curls.
