DC to New York Trains

A train trip from DC to New York offers passengers a scenic ride along the eastern seaboard. The DC trains depart from Union Station on Massachusetts Ave., NE.

  1. Types

    • Amtrak operates train service between DC and New York on either the Northeast Corridor train or Acela. Acela is faster, but more expensive. The Northeast Corridor train takes 3 1/2 hours, Acela takes 2 hours and 45 minutes.

    Cost

    • A reserved seat on the Northeast Corridor train costs between $75 and $143 (each way), depending on time of day. Tickets are cheapest early in the morning and late at night, and most expensive during the afternoon rush hour. Business class is an additional $37.

      A business class seat on Acela costs between $158 and $225 depending on time of day. First class costs an additional $102.

    Schedule

    • The first train leaves DC at 3:15 a.m. on weekdays, and the last train leaves at 10 p.m. For most of the day, the trains run every 30 minutes. On the weekend, the trains operate every 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the time of day.
