Driving tests usually consist of a written and roadside portion.

Passing your driving test is essential to obtaining a license in Michigan. The test assesses your driving skills and knowledge, and whether or not you would be a safe driver if granted a license.

Where to Go

In Michigan, all driving skill tests are administered through private, third-party agencies. In order to locate an approved agency, the Department of State maintains a listing on their website (see Resources). Potential agencies include driver schools, adult education centers and even private high schools.

How to Prepare

Be sure to use a vehicle for the test that is in good working order. Equipment failures or damaged safety features may render the vehicle ineligible for testing. In addition, be sure to study your driving manual thoroughly to learn the rules of the road, and get as much practice behind the wheel as possible with an already-licensed driver.

Considerations

If you need special accommodations to take the test, inform the testing center beforehand. Special arrangements may have to be made if you are hearing impaired, or need a translator because your native language is one other than English.
