The GPS can help get you out of some sticky situations on the road.

A global positioning system, or GPS, has become a common and very useful tool in today's world, especially for motorists. There are a wide variety of GPS makes and models, but they all basically work the same.

  1. Plugging In

    • GPS chargers can be plugged into the cigarette lighter port in older cars and most modern cars have one or more charger ports to plug in GPS or mobile phone adapters. Be sure to charge your GPS unit fully the first time you use it to ensure a long battery life.

    Getting Directions

    • GPS units will give you real time directions while you drive and even let you know when your turn is approaching by verbally giving you the heads up. To get directions, press, the screen marked "Directions" or "Where To," depending on your GPS model. Next, enter the town or city you wish to travel to and your destination's address. The GPS will direct you there from your exact location.

    Points of Interest

    • Most GPS units have an option in their main menu or sometimes in the map section that shows points of interest. These places include gas stations, restaurants, schools, mechanics and body shops. Many GPS units also have the ability to save places you visit as points of interest that can be viewed later.
