EMTs and WFRs are trained to respond to dangerous situations

EMT and wilderness first responder training educates men and women in emergency medical practices for inclement, in-the-field situations. Certification is gained through classroom work and hands-on scenarios.

  1. EMT Training

    • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training varies by level. In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has identified four fundamental levels: EMT-B (Basic), EMT-I/85/EMT-I/99's (Intermediate), and EMT-P (Paramedic). In general, EMTs are the highest form of pre-hospital care. However, their goal is to stabilize and safely transport, not to heal.

    Wilderness First Responder Training

    • WFRs, a certification level below EMTs, are specifically trained to deal with emergency situations while in the backcountry and without typical medical conveniences. WFR training encompasses not just the practice of medicine but also the many issues a medical team might encounter in the wilderness.

    Organizations that Offer Training

    • Wilderness First Responder courses are taught by medical institutions throughout the country, primarily in the West. These include Aerie Medicine, Wilderness Medical Society, Wilderness Medical Institute and Wilderness Medical Associates. EMT training, conversely, can be obtained at many universities and medical schools.
