Beginning Directions for Crocheting for Children
Crocheting is a way to create fabrics from yarn for blankets, scarfs, purses and craft items. By using a crochet hook and basic stitches anyone, including children, can learn how to make simple projects.
-
Crochet Hook
-
Beginners should use a large hook when learning how to crochet, such as a size G. The larger the hook, the bigger the stitch. The stitches should be loose enough for a crochet hook to easily fit.
Chain Stitch
-
Learning how to crochet helps to improve a child's hand eye coordination as they are working with the stitches. Have the child hold the hook in their writing hand. Tie a slip knot and begin the chain stitch by inserting the hook through the loop. Pull the string through the loop, which forms a new loop. Continue with the chain stitch until there is 50 or 60 chains. The chain stitches, which are the basis for any project, should be loose and not too tight.
-
Single Crochet
-
It might be easier to have a child watch as you crochet a couple of single crochet rows. Then have the child, begin a new row with the single crochet stitch, working the hook under both loops. Insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over and draw the hook through the loop to create a single crochet stitch.
