Homemade Mexican Centerpieces

Limes are the start of one homemade Mexican centerpiece.

Centerpieces add color and counterpoint to a Mexican dinner party table. They are easy to create and fun to make using fruits, flowers and unusual objects. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Start With the Menu

    • Centerpieces using ingredients from your menu are inexpensive and easy to find. Use a shallow terra cotta pot or bowl lined with leaves of soft butter lettuce and sprigs of cilantro. Make a pyramid of avocados and limes. Tuck gerbera daisies in hues of yellow, orange and hot pink into the spaces between the fruits and around the perimeter of the bowl.

    Cactus Garden

    • Dish gardens featuring succulents and cacti are readily available. Use a rustic, striped table runner under the dish garden. Arrange one string of battery-operated, white Christmas tree lights around the base and over the edge of the garden. Add long-stemmed orchid blooms, enough to contrast the desert plants without overcrowding.

    Margaritas

    • Fill a 60-oz. margarita glass with finely chopped watermelon or honeydew melon. Make a flower arrangement in the glass using brightly colored zinnias, marigolds, dahlias, gladiolus and Easter lilies, which are flowers found in Mexico. Insert an oversized drinking straw in the arrangement. Around the perimeter of the glass, hang five curly ribbon cascades in hot colors (found in gift wrap departments); they should be long enough to just touch the tabletop. Sprinkle the base of the glass with confetti.
