Financial Help Due to Disabilities

Disabled people can claim a number of benefits and tax credits.

A number of sources for financial help and tax credits are available to the disabled. It's just a matter of knowing what they are and how to apply for them.

Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income is a federal benefit funded by tax revenue available to disabled, aged and blind people who have no income. It provides money to help these groups buy essentials such as clothing, food and shelter. To find out whether you qualify, visit benefits.gov/ssa.

Homestead Tax Exemption

The Homestead Tax Exemption program allows homeowners who are permanently disabled to claim relief on the taxes they pay on their property. Rules governing the plan vary from state to state, so you'll need to contact your local property taxing authority to find out whether you qualify and how to apply.

Impairment-Related Work Expenses

If you're disabled and need to pay for additional facilities or services that allow you to work, you may be eligible to claim a tax credit for impairment-related work expenses.
