Traditional North American wedding ceremonies echo many elements from ceremonies of the past. Church weddings were the most popular venue, to honor families' religious beliefs and to bless the union. Rice was thrown on the couple to wish the couple good luck and prosperity

Popular in the 1920s, brides wore a bandeau which accented the popular bob style of haircut. The 1940s saw twill gowns and the cowl neckline emerge. Brides wore pure white wedding dresses as a sign of virginity and purity. It was bad luck for the groom to see his bride before their union so brides would wear a veil to cover their faces. When the groom lifts the veil it was a sign of male dominance.

Gowns

Almost every decade has a style of gown that stands out amongst the rest. The 1910s saw long dresses with flowing sleeves of lace. During World War II the flapper style of dress was very popular, it hugged the body with a lose beading or feathers on the bottom, usually ending at the knees. The 1960s saw bridal gowns become shorter and more tight-fitting than some earlier periods.
