Delta Airlines offers its passengers two types of airline tickets; those that are fully refundable and can be changed at any time without fee or penalty, and those that are non-refundable and will require you to pay a fee in order to make any changes. You may have purchased a non-refundable ticket because the fare was lower, and you did not expect to make any changes to your travel plans. Things happen, however, and if you have to change a Delta non-refundable ticket, you can do so online or over the phone.

Making Changes Online

Visit Delta's website, at delta.com. Click on the Itineraries tab, and you will be asked for your first and last name, as well as the confirmation number of your ticket. If you do not know your confirmation number, you can also search for your itinerary with your credit or debit card number or your ticket number. Look for your itinerary. It will list your dates of travel and the flights you have booked. Click on the tab that says Change Flights. Review the flight schedules to choose a different flight.

Making Changes by Phone

If you cannot find your itinerary online, or you find a flight that is on one of Delta's airline partners, you will need to call a reservation agent to make your change. To make a change to a domestic flight, call Delta at 1-800-221-1212. To make a change to an international flight, call Delta at 1-800-241-4141. Have your ticket number or confirmation number ready when you call. If you do not have that information, the Delta agent can look your information up by name and flight number. Explain you need to make a change to your ticket, and if there is a particular flight you know you want to book, the agent can let you know if there is availability.

Fees

Non-refundable ticket changes will cost you. As of 2013, Delta charges $150 for changes to domestic tickets and $250 for international tickets. If you booked your Delta flight through a travel agent or an online agency, you will be charged an additional $50 to make any changes to your ticket. In addition to the change fees, you will also have to pay the difference if the flight you are switching to costs more than the flight you originally purchased.

Deadlines

Delta allows you to make changes to your ticket for free within 24 hours of purchase. When you have to make a change to your Delta ticket, but you have not decided on a new flight yet, you have up to one year to use the ticket value. You will need to cancel the flights you are scheduled to be on, and then use your confirmation number to book new flights when you decide when you want to fly.

Same Day Changes

Delta will allow you to change the time of your flight on the same day you are confirmed to travel. At the time of publication, the fee for this service is $50. This is a good option if you are worried you will miss your flight or you want to depart earlier or later. You need to make this change within three hours of your scheduled departure time. This is good only on domestic flights and Delta flights to the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada and Puerto Rico.
