What Will Clean Glass Salt Shakers?

Salt may become trapped inside your glass shaker.

Any amount of moisture that gets into a salt shaker causes the salt to stick to the glass. Hot water and vinegar are two ingredients that remove stuck-on salt and fully clean the shaker.

Cleaning

Combine equal parts distilled white vinegar and hot water. Pour the mixture into the salt shaker and shake slightly. Keep the solution inside the shaker until the salt completely dissolves, and then empty it. Wipe down the outside of the glass with the same solution.

Considerations

If you can't open the salt shaker, the salt may have corroded around the inside of the lid. Fill a pot with water, bring to a boil, and carefully drop the salt shaker inside. Within 15 minutes, the water should dissolve the salt and make it possible to open and clean the shaker.

Warning

For salt shakers with silver or metal lids, test a small amount of the cleaning solution on the lid first. The vinegar may cause discoloration of the metal.
