How do I Remove Salt Stains From Automobile Carpets?

Road salt is different than regular table salt, and anyone living in a wintery environment can tell you it can leave quite a stain in car carpets. Eliminating road salt stains is possible, but unlike table salt, road salt dissolves better in cool water, not warm water.

  1. Necessary Materials

    • To clean the car carpet you will need a bucket of water, carpet shampoo, a vacuum, drying materials (cloths or sponges), and possibly white vinegar.

    Shampoo Method

    • Put a small amount of the carpet shampoo in cool water and mix. Then use the vacuum to remove as much salt and salt residue from the carpet, and afterward, apply the shampoo mixture. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, and dry with a cloth or sponge. Rinse the stain with cold water and dry; repeat rinsing until all the shampoo is gone.

    Vinegar Method

    • If multiple tries of the shampoo method did not completely remove the stain, make a mixture of one part water and one part white vinegar in the bucket. Apply this mixture on the stain and let sit for 15 minutes, then rinse and dry in a similar manner as before. After fully rinsed, let the carpet dry.
