Understanding the Purposes of Melanin
Melanin is a skin pigment, which is an element that provides the skin with color. People with a dark complexion have more melanin in their skin than those of a lighter complexion.

Production
-
Melanin is generated by cells named melanocytes. It gives protection against damage to the skin caused by the sun. The production of melanocytes increases in reaction to sunlight exposure. The occurrence of freckles are due to increased melanin production.
Purpose
-
The chief purpose of melanin is to consume ultraviolet radiation and to protect the new cells that are dividing within the deeper layers of the skin.
-
Precautions
-
For those with less melanin in the skin, it is suggested that the skin is protected against ultraviolet rays by wearing sunscreen of 30 SPF or higher. This should be worn every day as well as during winter. If exposed to the sun for long periods of time, apply the sunscreen every few hours and wear a hat for added protection.
