Indiana's Smoking Policies

Indiana's Smoking Policies thumbnail
There is no statewide smoking ban in Indiana.

There are no federal bans on smoking in the United States, so any laws prohibiting smoking have been put in place by state or local governments. Indiana is one of the states without a statewide smoking ban.

  1. Details

    • Indiana smoking laws are covered by the 1993 Clean Indoor Air Law, which prohibits smoking in some -- but not all -- indoor places. These places include schools, health care facilities, childcare facilities, government buildings, and most stores that designate particular, non-smoking areas, among others.

    Legislation

    • Since 2007, following a period in which several other states enacted smoking bans, the Indiana General Assembly tried three times to enact a statewide smoking ban, all of them unsuccessful.

    Fun Fact

    • There is a little known law in Indiana that states that there are only two reasons you can see a hypnotist without the referral of a doctor. One is to try to lose weight...and the other is to attempt to quit smoking.
