PC Printing of Postage Stamps Vs. Machine Postage Stamp Printing

People can't always get to the post office. Whether it is for business or personal use, many choose to print their postage from their homes or offices. The United States Postal Service (USPS) offers different solutions to make this possible.

  1. Types

    • People can print postage from a postage meter or from their computer. USPS says that postage meters print postage directly onto mail or an approved label. Online postage printing requires downloading software from USPS's Click-N-Ship service or an approved vendor like Stamps.com. Users print postage onto self-adhesive labels.

    Features

    • Online and postage meter printing requires a scale to weigh each package or letter.

In online printing the scale has a USB cord that connects to a computer while with postage meter printing the scale is connected to the postage meter. Both allow information like type of mailing and zip code to be entered to give the correct postage price.

    Considerations

    • Consumers can print postage for all types of mailings including First Class, Priority and Express mail. However, USPS says customers sending bulk mailings need to apply for a permit. For postage meter postage, users use electronic transfer methods from their bank account. Online printing customers can use a credit card.
