454 Chevy Performance

First produced in 1970, the Chevy 454 big block engine has been widely used in performance and full-size cars, trucks and marine applications. It is a popular towing engine due to its high torque output and has been readily adapted for factory performance installations, as well.

Standard Performance

With a 4-inch crankshaft stroke and 4.25-inch bore, the Chevy 454 became one of the largest engines GM produced for Chevy cars and trucks (GMC trucks, also). The long stroke enabled the engine to produce high levels of torque that were beneficial in large vehicles and towing applications. As an example, the 1970 454 was rated at 390 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque.

High Performance

The high-performance 454 in Chevrolet sports car models had higher-rated output due to better cylinder-head design, camshaft timing and induction systems. These engines were rated at 450 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. 1970 was the peak in rated power output as industrywide emission requirements and different power measurement standards (rear wheel hp versus flywheel hp) put downward pressure on the stated ratings beginning in 1971.

Competition

It is not uncommon, especially with modern aftermarket parts, for highly modified 454s to make in excess of 700 horsepower today. In fact, using the same basic platform with increased displacement can yield outputs well in excess of 1,000 horsepower in racing applications.
