Numerous activities teach kids how to follow directions

One of the key fundamentals children learn in kindergarten is how to follow directions. This is a skill that will affect how well they do in school and college. It even has a bearing on their future job performance. There are several approaches to teaching this essential skill to children.

  1. Game Play

    • Play "Follow the Leader" with the class. Have the class line up and explain the first person is the leader. The teacher gives a command to the leader, who leads the line in that activity. If the teacher says, "Hop on your right foot," the leader must follow the instructions. If the leader fails to lead the line according to the teacher's command, he goes to the end of the line and a new leader takes over.

    Coloring Activities

    • Another way to illustrate how to follow directions is by handing out a sheet with different shapes on it for the kids to color. Give them directions on how to color the sheet. For example, "Color all of the triangles purple."

    Writing Activities

    • Instruct the students that they are to write the alphabet following your instructions. For instance, tell them to make all consonants green and all vowels orange.
