Heavy Construction Training
Heavy construction requires the use of large equipment, such as cranes, excavators and bulldozers. Heavy construction workers need to be trained in how to operate the equipment and in safety measures.

Education
-
Heavy construction workers typically need no more than a high school diploma to get hired. However, even a high school education can prepare those entering the industry, particularly courses in shop and woodworking that train students to work with their hands and operate machinery.
Licensure
-
Construction workers who operate heavy equipment often need to obtain a license to prove they are qualified. Licensure varies, but generally consists of a combination of classwork, testing and work experience, and typically takes a year to complete.

Apprenticeships
-
Many heavy construction workers learn while on the job in an apprenticeship. That usually entails training under the direct supervision of another, more experienced worker or manager. Apprenticeships are usually administered by a union or trade association, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
