Online Training for Meteorologists

Online Training for Meteorologists thumbnail
Meterologists can take online courses that teach principles of atmospheric science.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) notes that training for meteorologists includes the study of such topics as thermodynamics, oceanography, and light and optics. Meteorologists can take classes online to stay abreast of new developments in the field or prepare for certification.

  1. Types

    • The National Weather Association maintains a listing of meteorological training courses, some of which are offered via the Internet. For example, The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research offers an online course in hydrology that helps develop skills in flood forecasting.

    Features

    • Features of online meteorology training courses are similar to those of comparable courses offered in a traditional classroom setting. Lyndon State University's online seminar in broadcast meteorology prepares participants to become certified by the American Meteorological Society. The seminar includes modules in meteorology fundamentals; it features online quizzes and discussions, as well as access to professors from the university's atmospheric sciences department.

    Potential

    • The BLS notes that the demand for trained meteorologists is expected to exceed the supply through the year 2018. Prospects are better for meteorologists with graduate degrees and for those seeking jobs in private industry. In May of 2008, the median annual wage for atmospheric scientists, including meteorologists, was $81,290.
