Children who require a social worker's assistance include those in foster care and adoptive families. Social workers often work in schools with children who have psychological challenges.

Social workers provide support to families and senior citizens facing challenges such as domestic violence or illness. Part of a family social worker's duties is to advise families and plan for the needs of patients.

Secure Profession

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment in social work "is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations through 2018." Social work can provide an individual with a decent living. The U.S. Department of Labor reports that in 2008 the median annual wages of social workers ranged from $37,210 to $46,220, depending on type of social work.
