What Equipment Is Needed for a Saltwater Fish Tank?

Saltwater fish are more expensive to maintain than freshwater.

A saltwater fish tank involves more effort and expense to start then a freshwater tank. Beginners should start with a small number of fish. Saltwater tanks require a large amount of equipment to set up properly.

The Tank

Determining the fish you plan on keeping in your aquarium is the first step since it dictates the size of your tank. Fish can range in size from 1 inch to 18 inches fully grown. Live rock, which inhibits the growth of algae, and sand are important -- about 1 lb. of live rock per gallon of water is substantial.

Tank Equipment

Aquarium filters and a heater are necessary for the maintenance of a saltwater tank. The heater needs to be large enough to heat the whole tank. Multiple filters, such as an under-gravel filter, protein skimmer and regular mechanical filters help keep the water safe for the fish.

Maintaining Water

Saltwater test kits are essential to keep the fish alive and healthy. Use them to test the water chemistry and monitor the amount of nitrogen in the water. Special salt water mixes provide the proper oceanic environment. An aquarium vacuum helps remove water from the tank when performing necessary, regular water changes.
