Read user-submitted reviews to get more information about potential Internet service providers.

With so many Internet service providers (ISPs) out there, it can become confusing to try and compare them all. In order to properly compare their rates and benefits, pay attention to a few key pieces of information and you'll be better equipped to choose an ISP that's right for you.

  1. Types

    • In most areas, Internet access is available through either dial-up or broadband connections. Dial-up speeds are generally sufficient for users looking to check email and do some very light browsing of the Internet. If you're planning to watch videos or download music, broadband service will allow you to do so at speeds ranging from 10 to 100 times faster than dial-up.

    Rates for Dial-Up

    • Rates for dial-up access start at about $5 per month and run as high as $25. When comparing dial-up plans, be sure to pay attention to the number of hours per month you're given in the plan. The cheaper plans often have a limit on the number of hours you can access the Internet per month, and you will be charged if you exceed your quota. In general, the benefits of dial-up are that it is cheaper and more widely available than broadband.

    Rates for Broadband

    • Broadband Internet is available through cable, DSL and satellite service providers. Speeds usually start at around 100 kilobits per second and go as high as several megabits per second, though download and upload speeds vary depending your location and the type of plan you choose. Most broadband connections are unlimited, meaning that you can use the Internet as much as you want without worrying about exceeding a set number of hours per month. Though it is usually more expensive, the primary benefit of broadband is that it is much faster than dial-up.

    Warning

    • When comparing Internet rates, be sure to read the fine print. Some ISPs will charge you for modem rentals, installation and setup. To get the clearest possible representation of what your plan will cost, speak to a salesperson and ask them what extra charges exist outside of their quoted monthly access price.
