Non-verbal communication is generally defined as "communication without the use of words." There is a wide range of non-verbal communication. The theme of members of each gender communicating non-verbally is usually tied to relationships, dating and marriage.

  1. Types of Non-verbal Communication

    • The sky is the limit when listing types of non-verbal communication, also referred to as body language. Some good examples are touching, facial expressions, posture, eye contact and smell. Types of non-verbal communication are also perceived in different ways depending on the culture.

    Application

    • Non-verbal communication and gender studies are both, academically speaking, "arts" and not "sciences." Inferences about either topic are based on studies and tendencies and cannot be always applied to individuals or sometimes groups of individuals. "2 + 2" always equals "4", but a boy and a girl don't always equal a relationship, a friendship or disharmony.

Common Traits of Female Non-verbal Communication

    • Females tend to take up, or claim, less space than men and stand closer to each other when conversing. The average female smiles more than the average male and crosses her legs at the knees or ankles.

Common Traits of Male Non-verbal Communication

    • Males usually understand a woman's touch to mean sexual invitation, while females do not necessarily equate a male's touch to mean the same thing. Males avoid eye contact, or use less of it, and frequently occupy a mutual armrest in between them and a female (such as in a movie theater).
