Bomb threats are often made simply to induce panic in the public.

Bomb threats disrupt business and frighten employees, customers, students and anyone in the area, whether there is an actual bomb involved or not. People calling in bomb threats may want to cause panic. Employees on site must be trained in how to respond.

    • Planning for bomb threats should involve assessing the facility's vulnerability and establishing contingency plans, as well as training employees in how to respond. Employees should be trained in evacuation plans, protection of vital documents, how to contact the authorities and how to search for bombs.

    Who Needs It

    • Employees in direct contact with the public should be trained in how to respond to bomb threats; in particular, receptionists and telephone operators should be trained in how to listen calmly to a threat, how to respond and how to notify others of the threat. Security and maintenance personnel should be trained in how to search for bombs.

    What Employees Should Know

    • All employees should know how to react to a suspicious object, and how to evacuate the building. They should also know the chain of command and the procedures to be followed in the event of a bomb threat.
